Who needs an endocrinologist?

Everyone has a system of hormones that is constantly tightly regulated by the glands of the endocrine system. However, there are times when this system becomes imbalanced, and needs to be regulated by a medical professional known as an endocrinologist. Some common causes of these imbalances include genetics, lifestyle/environment issues, and even random tumors or lesions on endocrine glands that may be causing a hormonal disruption.

People with endocrine issues can experience a negative impact in various aspects of their health and wellbeing, such as growth, weight, sexual functioning, emotional stability, and even sensory perception. Many people go about their daily lives with these various symptoms, assuming they are not serious enough to address when it very well may be a serious hormonal imbalance.

Anyone who is demonstrating symptoms of a disorder that may be impacting the endocrine system may wish to talk to their doctor about seeing an endocrinologist. Some common endocrine disorders include diabetes (1 and 2), osteoporosis, thyroid cancer, Graves’ disease, and Hashimoto’s disease.

During your first visit to your endocrinologist, your doctor will ask you a series of questions that involve your lifestyle and current medications to help pinpoint a diagnosis. They will be sure to answer any question you may have while reviewing your treatment plan in full.

Once the root cause of any endocrine imbalance is properly diagnosed by your endocrinologist, they will develop a plan to provide you with the appropriate synthetic hormones that will help balance out your levels. If the underlaying issue is a tumor or lesion, surgery may be needed.

Can an endocrinologist help with weight loss?

Being severely overweight or obese is a growing concern for many individuals, and sudden, unexplained weight gain or the inability to lose weight can be distressing. While there are certainly many possible causes of weight gain, some may be experiencing an underlaying endocrine issue that can be contributing to the excess pounds.

Certain endocrine disorders can be a cause of sudden weight gain or obesity in certain individuals, such as:

Hypothyroidism: This is a condition in where your thyroid gland may not be able to produce enough thyroid hormone. This can cause a slowing of the metabolism, causing weight gain and general sluggishness. This may be caused by an inflammation of the thyroid gland, or an autoimmune disorder that may keep it from functioning properly.

Cushing’s disease: A disorder where the adrenal gland produces too much of a hormone known as cortisol, which can cause weight gain and redistribution of fat.

Menopause: The various hormonal changes that a woman can go through during menopause can cause sudden weight gain in addition to redistributing more fat to the abdomen rather than the hips and thighs. Other symptoms can include a round face and general muscle weakness.

Our endocrinologist will work with the patient to assess the root cause of any concerning weight issues and develop a personalized treatment plan. This can include prescribing diet and exercise plans in addition to stabilizing the necessary hormone levels.
